iconic wine tasting arranged by Steven Spurrier, a British wine-merchant in Paris (now turned luminary), in 1976 in which top clarets and white Burgundies were tasted “blind” against California cabernet sauvignons and chardonnays. The result – a near whitewash for the Americans – was of seismic significance in securing a seat for the upstart “new world” of wine at the top table.
