You really can drink like a king for the price of just … drinking (i.e. let’s say 5-8 quid). All you need to do is take a little time and trouble to find the best-value winemakers. Some of them are even in the supermarkets so there’s really no excuse – find the rest of them on wine-searcher.com.

These are some of my favourites:

Argentina’s best-value winemakers: Bianchi, Colonia Las Liebres, Hormigas, Luigi Bosca, Nieto Senetiner, O. Fournier, Pulenta, Renacer, Michel Torino

Australia’s best-value winemakers: Andrew Peace, Brookford, Broken Shackle, Cranswick, Grant Burge, Marktree, One Chain, Runamok, St. Hallett, Trentham

Chile’s best-value winemakers: Anakena, Calbuco, Catena, Chocalán, Elki, Emiliana, Indómita, Los Espinos, Sierra Grande, Tabali, Siete Soles

Italy’s best-value winemakers: Adria, Alasia, Ca’di Ponti, Gran Sasso, Leonardo Co-op, Pasque, Ponte del Diavolo, Ponte Pietra, and just about anything from Sicily

Not all new cocktails are tricksy rubbish. Here’s another one that isn’t:

Espresso Martini – equal parts cold espresso coffee, Kahlua, white
crème de cacao and vodka shaken with ice and strained into a cocktail
glass.

Here’s one that probably is, but I love the idea:

Breakfast Martini – two parts gin to one part each of lemon juice and
Cointreau and a teaspoon of marmalade shaken with ice, strained in
to a cocktail glass and garnished with a tiny triangle of toast. Generally
consumed as – rather than as an accompaniment to – the most
important meal of the day.
