Foreword by Eileen Traub.

The collection represented in this catalogue was gathered with enthusiasm and dedication over four decades and began with inspiration from my college professor, mentor and kindred-spirited friend, Dr. Robin Johnson, who taught at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Johnson (who shared a birthday with Virginia Woolf) exuded a pure delight in Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury Group that quickly engrossed me in all things Bloomsbury.

In the mid-1970’s, Dr. Johnson and I co-led a field study group through UCLA Extension to England. From Bloomsbury to St. Ives, we explored and discovered. My husband, Lester, joined our group and together he & I began our collection. Quite by chance, we walked into the booksellers, G. Heywood Hill and encountered John Saumarez Smith who was not only extremely well informed, but also most gracious. We purchased our first volumes there and our collection was launched. Mr. Saumarez Smith would frequently send us volumes we were seeking and I must note that I would often
open our mailbox to find an unexpected treasure awaiting us.

At some point along the way, we decided to collect the complete Hogarth Press handprinted works. This was prior to the internet and searching out titles could and did take years. It was an engaging hunt and, ultimately, most satisfyingly successful.

The collection includes books, letters, inscribed and association copies, rare titles and annotated works. Many volumes have been loaned to exhibitions at such institutions as the Huntington Library in Pasadena, California, The Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut and Victoria University Library, Toronto.

Love of the literature led to a passion for book collecting and it was, indeed, a joyous adventure for both of us.
