A mate in the pub the other day said he’s been buying wines at three-for-a-FIVER (no, that’s not a typo) from the Turkish down the road in Stokie. So obviously I had to check it out…
There’s a red and two whites and the former (an IGT Sicily Nero d’Avola 2009) is actually GOOD, Godammitall. Looks good in the glass with proper gradation of colour, not just a block of purple, and has bags of cherry fruit and typical nero d’avola brimstone minerality. Even has a quite handsome label. It’s at the level of any of the supermarket’s own brand Sicilian reds (for two-and-a-half to three times the price) and must be white van wine, obviously – customs duty alone is more than £1.67.
The first of the whites (IGT Emiliana pinot bianco 2009) didn’t go down well, with Mrs G effin’n'blindin’ “Is it wine? It’s not wine!” I’ve had worse – it has a bit of weight, and a bit of oak (presumably from chips) but I’m afraid it was – as far as I can remember – the first bottle to go down the sink this year. Haven’t plucked up courage for the second white yet …
