249. WOOLF, VIRGINIA.

Kew Gardens, Hogarth Press, Richmond, 1919. One of "about 170 copies" (Leonard Woolf, quoted in J. Howard Woolmer, A Checklist of the Hogarth Press 1917-1946). The Vanessa Bell woodcut on page 16 is in Woolmer's first state, i.e. "printed on the page" (as opposed to pasted onto it). An excellent copy in the fragile original wrappers (by the Omega Workshops). £12,500

248. (WILDE, OSCAR). DOUGLAS, LORD ALFRED.

Some Letters from Wilde to Douglas, Privately printed for William Andrews Clark, San Francisco, 1924. One of 225 numbered copies in quarter-vellum, for private distribution. With notes by Arthur C. Dennison and Harrison Post, and an essay by A.S.W. Rosenbach. This copy has a forged 'Holograph letter by Oscar Wilde' in an envelope printed thus which is tipped-to a rear endpaper. The forgery is one of those thought to have been executed by Wilde's nephew by marriage Fabian Lloyd - a theory that Oscar's grandson Merlin Holland has now effectively disproved - and was one of a number purchased by Clark. Bookplates of A.J.A. Symons, Llewellyn Wright and George Williamson on front pastedown, presentation letter from William Andrews Clark on rear pastedown. An excellent copy. £1250
